Jacksonville, AL – Liberty University’s football team kicked off their Conference USA campaign with a resounding road victory, defeating Jacksonville State 42-34 on Saturday. The Flames showcased a blend of explosive offense and tenacious defense, pushing their record to 3-0 early in the season.

The game started with both teams exchanging blows, but it was Liberty’s running game that set the tone early. Senior running back Julian Gray led the charge, rushing for 156 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, averaging an impressive 8.7 yards per attempt. Gray’s powerful performance was complemented by quarterback Ethan Houck, who threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities.

“I felt we found our rhythm early on,” said Gray. “The offensive line opened up some big holes, and we capitalized on our opportunities.”

Liberty jumped out to a 14-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, with Houck connecting on a touchdown pass to wide receiver Ean Canion. The Flames continued to build momentum, scoring another two touchdowns in the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 28-7 advantage.

However, Jacksonville State wasn’t ready to call it quits. The Gamecocks fought back in the second half, led by quarterback Cade Cunningham, who threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Jacksonville State managed to close the gap, scoring 20 unanswered points in the second half, bringing the score to a nail-biting 34-28.

With the game on the line, Liberty’s resilience shone through. A critical touchdown pass from Houck to tight end Matt Merdinger in the final minutes sealed the deal, restoring the Flames’ lead at 42-34.

Defensively, Liberty was anchored by safety Devin Henderson, who made four solo tackles and contributed to the pressure on Jacksonville State’s offense. The Flames’ defense forced crucial turnovers, stifling the Gamecocks’ momentum when it mattered most.

Head coach Ru Hassell praised his team’s effort and composure. “We faced adversity today, but our guys didn’t flinch. They showed heart and determination, and that’s what we need as we move forward in this season.”

As Liberty heads home to prepare for their next matchup, the Flames will look to build on this early-season triumph. With a potent offense and a defense that continues to improve, the potential for a special season is palpable in Lynchburg.

Next up, Liberty will face off against a tough opponent in their quest for the Conference USA title, and fans are eager to see if the Flames can keep their winning streak alive.
