In a surprising turn of events during the 2026 NFL Draft, Julian Gray, the Heisman Trophy winner from Liberty University, was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round with the 28th pick. Despite an impressive performance at the NFL Combine—where he clocked a 4.53-second 40-yard dash and showcased elite jumping ability—questions regarding the level of competition in college football caused Gray to slip down the draft boards.

Liberty Head Coach Ruben Hassell expressed his belief that the Eagles may have landed a hidden gem, stating, “I truly believe Julian has the potential to be a game-changer at the next level. The Eagles might have gotten a steal in this draft.”

Gray himself is excited about the opportunity to step onto the NFL stage, particularly with the chance to learn from All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley. “I can’t wait to get started,” Gray said. “Being able to practice with someone of Saquon’s caliber will only help me grow as a player. I’m ready to put in the work and contribute to the team.”

As Gray embarks on his professional journey, all eyes will be on him as he seeks to prove that his college success can translate to the NFL, and his determination to rise above the doubts surrounding him will be a driving force in his rookie season. The Eagles have made a bold move, and only time will tell how this decision will shape their future.
